The Republic of Yemen is a Parliamentary republic located in Western Asia, with an area of 555,000 square kilometers. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia from the north, Oman from the east, the Red Sea from the west, and Arabian Peninsula from the south. Yemen was previously split into two countries; the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen and the Yemen Arab Republic, however in the 1990s the two countries became one again. Due to the struggles of the unification both sides of Yemen have faced grave poverty and hard times.
With the discovery of oil in different places throughout the country, Yemen was able to gain some economic status, but the low pricing of oil at that time did not do Yemen justice. Although Yemen is rich in natural resources that range from oil, natural gas, seafood, to rock salt, and marble; Yemen has not been exploiting these resources enough.
Yemen has not been able to sustain its population for years and has been turning to other countries for assistance. Nonetheless, over the past years, Yemen has been trying to gain enough power to stand on its own feet and become strong again.
The capital and largest city of Yemen is Sana`a. Sana`a is the center of the Sana`a Governorate. It is one of the highest capitals in the world. What makes Sana`a unique is its constant population since the creation of the city. This city is also, distinctive in its architectural buildings as most buildings are decorated with geometric patterns.
As a Muslim country most of the population is Muslim, however there are other religions spread out.
The official language of Yemen is Arabic with English spoken in some areas. The Republic of Yemen is a part of the UN, Arab League, and Organization of the Islamic Conference.
